Samsung have developed a 8 MegaPixel Camera Module which is likely to go into production first half of next year which is likely we wont see any handset till 2009.

I think the 5 MegaPixel camfones (:se: K850 et al) ALREADY threatens the EXISTENCE of the 3-4 MP digicams

If those cam phones would have:

-1/2.5 or a 1/1.8Sony Super Had CCD sensor or the Fuji CCD honeycomb sensor
-at least 1.5-2 fps burst mode or the 10fps unsaved burst mode like SE's bestpic
-proper image processor which greatly influences dynamic range, colors, saturation noise and more.
-Optical IS - CCD shift or Lens Shift
-3 or 5x optical zoom internal without affecting the sensor size just like the T7
-ISO sensitivity of at least up to 1000 without so much noise
-More Settings than what's available at the mid end digicams

then it would really beat mid-low end digicams. but given the fact that mobile companies were focusing upon the trend of slim phones which greatly influences the use of smaller yet crapier sensors i highly doubt it it could even threat them(digicams) although there is one phone who manages to have a 1/2.5" Super HAD CCD sensor - the imobile-902 the lack of Optical Zoom and IS, slower image processing, more decent and digicam like dynamic range just pushed it behind the mid-end digicams.

2009 is a lucky year for me as im stuck in a contract till May so be intresting to see what pops up by then, somebody posted about a Motorola phone launching next year so it is actually coming along

I don't think phones will replace Digital Cameras,
as they come out every year with higher pixels anyway 12MP is standard atm on those by 2009 im sure 20MP will come of age

Maybe at 2020.

Unfortunately they increase megapixels without touching sensor size. no digicams(including camphones) can compete with Fujifilm FinePix F31fd that has only 6MP(read last two paragraphs) and then read this.

megapixels war is ruining image quality.

I agree with u here especially with the FujiFilm f31fd story!! I have one and i know what it can do! Its simply an amazing Camera! CamPhones will one day come at Par, but as of now i dunn think its near as good as the F31 type cameras! MEGAPIXEL aint everything! I have never used anythin more than 3.2 mp in the F31fd! Night Shots is where a Camera's Photos are put to its ultimate test....

Functionality-wise, the i-mobile 902 equals my two old digital cameras: Olympus C-350 and Sony DSC-S75 (both 3 MP) but without optical zoom and AE lock. It also lacks IS (image stabilization) but so does my two digicams! Quality-wise it is better! Here's a comparison between the Olympus and the 902 I posted some time back in the 902 photos thread:
Note: these are crops of full size photos.

Olympus C-350

i-mobile 902

I would call the 902 a P&S camera with an undersized lens. And due to how the camera puts image quality before user-friendliness, the smaller lens gives slow shutter speeds, making it difficult to operate handheld anywhere except outdoors during daytime, and here is where IS would have been very handy.

You must be joking. I've had my camera nearly 4 years,it takes better pictures than a phone.

Joking? Look again at my samples above. Edit: I see that you're browsing from a phone. I guess you can't see the photos I posted.

I suspect that no matter which model of camera you own, it is bound to be much better than your Nokia 5300 And it's sure to also be better than SE's and Nokia's current top-of-the-range camera phones. The factor here is the sensor type.

My point in my previous post is that there are camera phones and then there are camera phones!
