I just got this thing yesterday for Christmas. It's breaking my heart that I'm finding such obvious and annoying flaws in such a fantastic present.
1. The creaky case is quite annoying and although I know this is will have little or no practical effect on this phone's structural integrity, it does grind my gears
2. Why on EARTH can't I set k800i quality photos off of my old M2 1GB card as the wallpaper without them appearing grainy and blurred DESPITE the fact that they appear crystal clear when displayed in the camera album.
3. On top of that, it would appear that I cannot set a k850i quality photo as maximised wallpaper without incurring a "you don't have enough memory even though your card is half empty along with your phone, so delete stuff" message. Actually doing this has no effect and only serves to annoy me further.
4. Finally, apart from a first synchronisation with PC Suite, the software will no longer accept that my phone is plugged in and in phone mode. I've tried reinstalling it but I have a feeling it isn't ready to realise that the drivers have already been installed onto my computer from the previous time it didn't function.
Can ANYONE bring me some form of relief?! All help would be MUCH appreciated.

** This is a Feature they forgot to add in the manual. They all do this so at present i suggest ear muffs ***

** Fault with the current firmware on the phone ** A new firmware is due soon, but at present dont hold you breath in it being fixed as SE have bigger problems with the phone

*** what firmware did your phone come with. This sounds like a fault with the latest firmware ***

*** dont use this software to be honest ***

*** mmmm not sure who to answer this one ***
Welcome to the world of the K850i. Happy Xmas as well.

Wow, that was pretty quick
The main reason I want to use PC Suite is because I can save text messages onto my computer which is really useful considering I'm a pretty heavy texter and run out of space all too often.
How do I check the firmware?

I use
http://www.fjsoft.at/en/ (my phone explorer) Much better in my eyes.
Also >*
Or you can press menu, settings, update service and then click on software version.
To be honest, You can set your phone up to store the SMS on your memory card and there is no limit on how many the phone holds as long as you have memory on the phone or card.
Oh and your welcome

Your welcome, However this is very old firwmare now and is very buggy.
There is a new firmware out R1CA037 and you can update the firmware over your network by clicking on update, or you can use SEUS (Which is Sony Ericsson update service) but you must follow the instructions carefully.
If you use it through your current GPRS connection, then be careful of the charged unles you get it cheap or pay for it in a bundle like i do.
If you want any more, please ask

Will do, the advice is much appreciated.
Well fancy that, it still won't register my phone's presence. I think I'm going to try and restart my computer, see if that makes a difference.
Thanks once again!

*** CREAKY BACK SOLUTION ***
My initial impression of the phone was not great after owning the superb k800i (still have that too) but when I asked myself what I really didnt like about it, it was the creaky back when typing out text messages. In fact the build quality that I disliked about the phone actually boiled down to just that. I dont have the screen or dust issue so I set out to fix the creaky back rather than return it and hope for the best with the next one.
Solution 1
Opened the battery compartment and slipped a small piece of card in the tiny space between the phone back and the sim/card holders. This kind of worked but pushed out the back of the phone further than it was meant to be.
Solution 2
As I wasnt happy with the first I set out to correct the problem once and for all so i took the card back out. Next I got super glue with a brush applicator rather than the nozzle type. Now, if you open the battery compartment and look at when the phone back sits against the chassis of the phone on the left and right of the open battery compartment you will see two little bits of plastic that the back is meant to sit against. On most k850's with the creaking problem you will see that there is play resulting in movement of the back when texting etc. To resolve simply push a knife or something slim into the gap between the phone back and the sim/card holders to gently push the back away from the chassis slightly to give you some room to work. Next get the super glue and make sure there is a very small amount on the brush. I added a tiny drop of glue either side on the little bits of plastic that the back is meant to sit against and then held the back firmly to them until it had dried solid.
Im pleased to say that its now perfect. So much easier than hoping for a satisfactory replacement, and when you dont have the screen or the dust issues then you really dont want to tempt fate!
A word of caution though. too much glue could result in it spurting out of the sides when pushed together. If you get any glue on that glossy back the look of the phone will be ruined so be very careful. It needs virtually no glue and if you dont use enough the first time you can always apply more. Also on the side where you have the red release catch for the battery, be careful not to brush this with the glue as you will have sucessfully glued your batter into your phone. I took mine out before I started LOL.
Oh a steady hand doesnt go amiss either

Yeah I had considered your first solution although I was worried about the result for the same reason as yourself.
I'm gonna give the glue a go!
