I hear a call for our in-house PC expert, Cycovision! Meanwhile, let me answer what I can. A Core2Duo processor is better than a Centrino Core Solo, but the difference will be more noticeable when you run a program that's actually designed to fully utilise the dual core processor. As for whether to get a notebook or desktop, I'd like to know if mobility is an issue. If you do not intend to bring your notebook around, go for the desktop. You'll be able to get a better desktop for the price you pay for a notebook. Besides, a desktop is much more upgradeable. Notebooks aren't really designed to run for prolonged periods of time and doing so may result in overheating. Also, because of this, their processors will not always run at their maximum capacity as that would also add to overheating, as well as shorter battery life. So, that's my take on it, and I'm open to correction if I've had any misconceptions. Cheers!

Yup, I agree with that
Also, what part of India are you from? Laptops are generally harder and more expensive to repair and they suffer with heat and humidity more than desktops do. Not a problem if you can send it back to where you bought it from for repair, of course, but still a consideration if you're in a hot, humid part of India and it's not going to live indoors in an air-con room all of the time...

I came here to say "ask cycovision,he is the best in this dept" but looks like he beat me to it
I would prefer a desktop to a laptop anyday. For the price, you get Better specs, upgradability, easier and cheaper to repair, not as much care needed compared to a laptop...For mobility,i got my trusty P990 when i need to surf and check emails(right cyco??)
my laptop is lying unused for the past 6 months.(Btw,Will there be any problem if my laptop is not used for long time??)

Yep,with all your suggestions,I would get a Desktop. As I don't need to move it about, plus,I live in Kolkata, where in monsoon, even unraised ground floors of flats gets submerged under water and there's heavy moisture. And also You're correct,a core2duo would be effecient but Maybe not over-sufficient.Let's see...another prob. Assembled or Branded!???

Not much price difference between the two.
But a branded one gives you good warranty.
Although I'd personally go for assembled one, come what may(have really nice experiences)...

It's true that some branded PCs do use custom built motherboards and sometimes cases which means that certain components may be non-standard and therefore not easily replaceable / upgradable.
Since you are looking for future-proofing, I'd go for a custom built machine to avoid this problem, although you would initially get better value for money with a branded machine simply because they are typically cheaper through mass-production.
