Well, I started this topic mainly because there are 2 biggest possibilities (and hopes) regarding SE's next flagship smartphone's hardware text input styles namely 1. Flip with Qwerty underneath 2. Dual Function Keyboard. I believe that while the dual function keyboard is paving way for a new breed of text input method, the flip is still very much relevant for the reasons below:
1. Choice between touchscreen and non-touchscreen UI which no other manufacturer are offering making all Pxx0 units unique to this day
2. Saves battery with Flip Closed since the display screen has less area to light up
3. Gives true one handed navigation using ONLY ONE THUMB, just like any other non-touchscreen phones with navi-pads
4. Attracts a wider range of consumers, those who want to use a high-end smartphone device but with the simplicity of a normal phone, tech savvy consumers, people who want to have a choice of dramatically changing the outlook of their phones occasionally, etc.
5. Flip is stylish and has a romantic touch to the phone that compliments the 'brains' it contains
6. The possibility of creating other uses for the flip ie, mirror at the back of the flip for the ladies, etc.
7. *fill in the blanks if you flip fans have anything more to say*

Hi Mode,
Whilst i fully understand why you and many others both like and wish to retain the flip for all the reasons you have given above, it does appear that what we all think of as P Series devcie with it's look and functionality is now a thing of the past.
The P1 defiantly does not retain the format we were used to and from all that has been said about the P5 and the photo shops we have seen whilst not being exactly as it is if it is in that style i really don't see how the flip could still be incorporated in that design. It does appear that the flip may be gone for good and that IMO may well disappoint a lot of past users.

From the days of the R380 I loved and still love the flip. I'm bitterly disappointed that the p series is to be an ordinary phone (design wise) without the flip.

Hmm ... although I was really big fan of the flip for years, I think that it is just not indispensable any more ... don't think that one handed operation will be a problem in a device similar to sealover's concept, maybe we'll have to use touchscreen a bit more ...

... ( + it is starting to look too '90's

)
5-way jog dial is a totaly different matter, of course

The flip didn't help to save battery, and made the programmers design the applications twice (flip+no flip) which accounts for the lack of flip close support from so many apps.
Interestingly the same is happening for landscape support on UIQ3, which is disapointing...

@mode, you very clearly have explained the reasons why I still want the flip. @Dogmann, unfortunately although I tried a few times, I just can't get used to the awkward keyboard design of the P1. I also can't understand why they got rid of the lens cover.
Anyway, if SE decides to go with a different form factor from now on, then I guess there is no need to stick to SE. There are plenty of other manufacturers out there who do a much better job of supporting their products.
I guess I will stick with my P990 until new technology comes to a level that makes it inconvenient not to have it.

@makbil
Good point

to wait until it will be unconvinient not to have it.
I wait too, for a new P.
I hope it will surprise you positively, too.

The standard keypad is a tried and tested, and thus refined method of use, the problem with a flipless design is that there simply isn't the history of develpment behind the UI. This means that there's no standard, cross platform method of use, and implies a learning curve for the new user. I think therefore that it should be kept as an option, but there also needs to be a lot more R&D into the touchscreen UI.
I also REALLY miss the 5-way jog dial, and the only reason for eliminating it, as far as I can see, is cost...a shame when they're not charging any less for thier phones.
