> Nokia 6610 vs Sony Ericsson T68i
Bookmark topic
Good day all, this is my first post, and I hope it won't be a flame war, just my honest opinions about these 2 wonderful phones.
I bought my new Nokia 6610 less than 48hrs ago, I didn't regret it. Why so? Some comparisons:
Nokia Sony Ericsson
----- -------------
4096 256 colour screen
40 instrument (4cumulative) polyphonic ringtones Monophonic ringtones
Infrared, Cable, GPRS, WAP Bluetooth, Cable, Infrared, GPRS, WAP
Just some basic comparisons. Here's the rundown over my use of these 2:
Both phones excel in the 'basic qualities' of a mobile phone. The call quality is great in both phones, they have no serious software bugs. How about the miscellaneous features?
Picture phonebook.
I love the one in the T68i. You can set different pictures for different people in your phonebook, along with a different ringtone too. The 6610, unfortunately, does not have this feature, no setting of personal pictures or ringtones, only caller groups. And there are only 6-7 groups you can use. I also noticed that the caller group logos are a different class from 'normal pictures' in the gallery. You also can't use downloaded ringtones in callergroups, only preset ones. (A nokia dealer told me to expect software upgrades from Nokia to add picture phonebooks and such, currently, only 7650 has this feature. After all, SE added picture phonebooks only in later flash upgrades, if I'm not mistaken)
How about the mobile camera? The Nokia 6610/7210/6100 has the new Camera headset attachment, which is a tiny combination of handsfree and digicam camera, it looks pretty stylish. The Sony Ericsson T68i has the MCA series of Communicams, so both are on equal ground here. The Nokia's camera fits from the bottom of the phone, through its 'Pop-port' (looks like an ericsson, but the connectors are rubberised and secured using 2 metal locks, very snug, compared to SE's modules), and a wire running to the camera (you can hang it around your neck, its light and looks like a pendant).SE's camera is fitted directly on the bottom of the phone, and the usual shakiness of the modules apply.

Continuing from the above post...
Polyphonic ringtones vs Monophonic
Polyphonic ringtones are great to have. They sound pleasing to the ears, its just a feature which the t68i didn't have at that time. Not essential, but fun to play with. (They aren't as loud as monophonic tones though).
And some personal opinions:
I don't really like the camera attachments for both phones. Why? I found it much better to have a digicam to take pictures with, then edit the picture specifically for the phone - it will look better than taking it with the camera direct. (That's just me, really. I like trouble sometimes lol)
I really love the hpm-10 mp3 handsfree for SE. Wonderful thing. I realised that while taking the subway, radio reception (6610) ain't too good most of the time. I prefer listening to my own collection anyway. Just a pity the module attachment is kind of loose. Nokia's 'Pop-port' is a really great design.
Both phones are great. There's no such thing as perfect to me in this world, different phones suit different needs. I will take my t68i for work and general usage. When night comes and I go out to have fun, the attention-grabbing capabilities of the 6610's colour screen and poly ringtones are great.
Also some things to clear up:
You can transfer images and ringtones via IR from your PC. Nokia PC Suite 5 officially supports it.
The reason 7650 colour screen looks better is because its an active matrix LCD, while the 7210/6610/6100 has the so called 'passive matrix' (similar to SE). Also, the 7650 adjusts its brightness automatically. (Got the above info from a phone technician)
Problem: My Ir adapter (USB-IRdA) works perfectly well with my PDAs, Laptops, and the t68i. but for some unknown reason, it doesn't like Nokia phones at all. It would detect the phone, the moment a transfer starts, the phone disconnects and such. Anyone else faced such a problem?
I hope for no flames, and welcome anyone who had experiences with different phones to share. (I wanted to buy the P800, but its not out in SE Asia yet, not to mention its going to be really pricey).

Yep, 6610 doesn't have bluetooth. Wasn't that in the first post? Hmmm.
Nokia also has mp3/radio modules available, but I'm not sure if they are compatible with the 6610. (Probably not)

Well, T68 is having bluetooth, right. But is it an asset? Not sure.
When I bought my T68 14 months ago, it was for two reasons : colour screen and bluetooth. I though that I would use bluetooth a lot, as it seemed to be a great standard. But if I look back, I've never used it!
Now, I'm thinking of getting a Nokia 6100 which has the same features as 6610 in a smaller phone. I'm just desapointed that it hasn't got picturephonebooking. But my T68 is getting old and the joystick is not working fine anymore. (when I want to go down, it clicks instead of going down, most of the time).
I think that T68 is getting older compared with the newcomers (Panasonic GD87, Nokia 7210/6610/6100, etc.) and SonyEricsson is doing nothing to counter the competition. (P800 was sooo delayed and it's just the 7650 counterpart)
Well, seems like Esato is deading, but guys... SonyEricsson isn't alive since months now!

@silex
the P800 is not a counterpart of the 7650. you can't compare apples to oranges.
though nokia is trying to sell the 7650 as a smartphone, it really isn't. but if you believe that the 7650 is a smartphone, then the P800 is the SMARTERphone
(anyway, the P800 is out in some markets already.)

Nokia phones dont have animated Gif's,
The IR connection with a pc must be through certain softwares,
Pics/melodies in phone can only be sent via mms to another phone and it cannot recieve from any phone, not even other nokias.
In mms compositon you cant add pages, add ringtone, change background colour or a time.
The T68i has animated Gif's.
No need for any software to send files from or to the phone as long its a valid file.
You can send pics/melodies/voice memoes via Ir/Blueetooth
This is what i could remeber at the moment.

With a tiny free app, you can use animated gifs with the 7650. No problem. It is so wrong to compare the t68i and 7650. The 7650 wins in every aspect. I have both.
