The title says pretty much about what I'd like to know.

I've been going to SE's forum asking the same question but can't get any answers from the members of the boards.

What I'd like to know is, how does the Walkman store/retrieve info about the tracks, moods, ratings and such?

My mp3 collection life depends on most of all ratings. I use this as my base to create playlists with tracks I like and sort out the ones I don't, but I can't seem to find any information regarding this at all.

On a sidenote, is the Walkman conjured up by UIQ or SE?

Best Regards?

It gets all the info it needs from the EXIF data of the song. (in Vista you can view and edit it by right-clicking on the file of the song, choosing properties and then navigating to the Details tab. I forgot how it worked on XP. )
The mood/SensMe data, however, is compiled by the Media Manager PC software that comes with the phone (while transferring songs from PC to phone).

Not EXIF, ID3. EXIF is for pictures

Argh, damnit... If this all adds up, that means I won't be able to get to my ratings of my MP3 files. In XP, there is no 'Rating' field that corresponds to what rating I set on the track; it only has the most basic of tags available.
I'm going to experiment with ID3 v1.x tags as opposed to v2.x. I'm at the moment using v2.x only because it's getting more and more frequently used.

I'll post back as soon as I've done some experimenting.

Note; I've tried tracking the 'Rating' change from my W960 to the computer I'm using and can't see the changes in value I do so far. This needs some more looking into.

Ok, so I've been using MediaMonkey to try and set things straight but still can't find a way to make changes happen to the rating. I've tried XP's Explorer way of handling ID3-tags and it doesn't matter what or how I change the tag info on the files, they are still the same, *unless* I delete the file, update the info offline and then readd the file to the phone (with the vital step of having to do a media library update on the phone between the deletion and copying).

This updates the info on the file on the phone, sure, but still I can see no way of editing the Rating on the file on the phone and having that value copied to my computer.

Have you got a procedure I can test this out on, cause I'm running out of ideas fast.

Hmmm, actually not!
I never thought that I'd even consider looking back at iTunes now that I've got another mobile media player, but sure, I'll do anything to make this work.

Not that I'm having any hopes for this but can iTunes sync for me too?

It should be possible to sync with iTunes, but I'm not sure.

Also WMP 11 supports ranking, too.

Well, I've tried MediaMonkey which is one of my favorite choices of Media Managers so far but I've liked iTunes too due to the simplistic way it handles folders and tunes, but it's slow as a snail though....

But I can't for the life of me get the Ratings of the mp3 to stick. I've tried *alot* of different ways of transfering, editing and rescanning the files on the phone and on my computer, but the Rating seems as far as I'm aware stuck inside the phone somewhere.

Has anyone here been able to transfer tunes to their phone with the Rating of the file intact from the computer to the phone and vice versa? The reason I'm asking is that I use the Rating as a solid base for all my music when creating playlists. What I'm really interested in is a way of transfering Ratings from the phone to the computer. That way I can listen to a couple of albums on the phone while on the road, rate every tune I listen to, transfer them in and create a custom playlist based on Rating. While forever have the Ratings of the tunes stored on my computer for future reference.

Thanks in advance!
