SONY BMG has seen the light and has dropped DRM. They will start selling online music as MP3 rather than the protected ATRAC!

Many said it would never happen, but like the eventual death of BETA, market forces reign supreme. DRM is DEAD! Long live MP3!

"The impetus to lift copyright protection represents a sea change for the recording industry, which for the better part of a decade has used DRM to guard against what it considers illegal distribution and duplication of songs purchased online. In abandoning DRM on à la carte song purchases, the labels could create a raft of new, less restrictive ways of selling music over the Internet, such as through social networks like Facebook and News Corp.'s (NWS) MySpace. Partnerships with retailers such as Amazon could also help the music industry take a swipe at Apple (AAPL), which has come to dominate the legal download market through a one-size-fits-all pricing scheme record labels find restrictive."

"The company began giving away DRM-free promotional downloads for recording artists that sell less than 100,000 units, and at least one artist gained mainstream exposure through the effort. "A lot of these tests have led people to believe that maybe this works," says a Sony BMG executive who asked not to be identified."

Ive never had any issues with sony drm but it might be because Ive never downloaded from sony!

Neither have I. But it's more significant than that. Sony was the biggest defender of DRM, and until now the last big recording company to continue pushing DRM. What this change means is the death of DRM completely across the music industry. It means buying your own music and being able to use it on any device you like.

For Sony it means no longer being forced to use ATRAC on mini-disc, for Apple music purchases it means no longer being forced to use ipods. For music purchase online generally it means being able to buy music that you can copy to as many mp3 players, cd's, computers as you like.

You may not purchase music online, fair enough. personally I don't mind buying music online when I can use it how I like. I absolutely detest buying music online and avoid it like the plague when it means that song can only play on one computer and one device.

What I see coming out of this is much cheaper online music that I can use where I like. Sure I've downloaded through limewire etc, but if I could pay 20 cents for a DRM free song that I can easily find, instead of downloading 5 of the same song on limewire trying to find one of decent quality, then I would much rather pay for it.

There are hundreds of thousands of people like me who don't buy music online only because of drm restrictions and the relatively high price (1.69AUD for a 128Kbps DRM-restricted itunes track is a rip off)

their latest mp3 players are actually "mp3" players too

They also support drag and drop so you no longer need to use sonic rage (sonic stage) to transfer files.

However they don't support atrac, though that's no real loss other than for anyone who was silly enough to keep all their music in atrac without any MP3 backup.

Their video players also support AAC, unprotected as well as drm protected wma. The music only players support mp3 and unprotected wma.
