If yours is the same as mine, the wifi is open but not free...if you browse to mine with the built in browser you are redirected to an information page

Since you're dealing with email sending there's a couple of things to check.
1. That you're connected to the hotspot properly. To make sure, open up the browser on the phone and try to access a website or two, if you can then you're connected. (Make sure the wifi conection has priority

hehe)
2. Any sane SMTP service requires authentication if you're not logging in through their own networks, so for whatever SMTP server you're using, make sure you have it setup to authenticate. (EG: My home wifi network has it's internet connection out through adsl, so the SMTP I have in my phone is that of my ADSL provider, outside of home i need to make sure that SMTP server is being provided with my username and password because i'm not on my home network any more)

the thing is i just tried to send a small email from my phone using gprs and it also timed out so either googlemail is having problems or i have got dodgy outgoing settings???

right the reason it wasnt sending the small test email through gprs is i had it set to use o2wap gprs account, so i changed it to o2 mobile web account and it sent it, the problem is if i go back to mcdonalds and try to send the big email, but connect to wifi network then it will probably timeout again, as it will still be using o2 mobile web account but wifi set as number 1 priority it will try to use that and then prob just time out!.

I've tried it too in Denmark. You can get connected but then you'll have to login or something and according to the website that shows upon connection, it costs money.
