The other day I was using my W960 at home to have a play with Google maps and I connected the phone to my home wifi network.
Sitting less than two metres from the router, I had a surf around the map of my local area and...it...was...unimaginably...slow. I have an N-class router though I'm sure the WLAN in the phone can't be more than a G, and probably more likely a B, but I was surprised by the slowness of it all.
Then last night I was showing off my new toy to some mates in the pub and did Google maps again, this time relying on the 3G. Again it...was...sloooooow.
So I'm thinking to myself, maybe when the little planet earth was flashing at me while I was at home it was actually connected via 3G?
Having said all that, I was royally trumped in the speed stakes by a mate with an HTC TYTN II which had a rip-roaring download speed that was able to surf Google Maps so fast that the tiles were appearing almost immediately. Same phone network too (o2).
Anyone have any clues on how to tell what is in use and whether my download speed (versus the HTC) is in any way typical. It just feels a little like I'm hamstrung.

Look at this image;

If you notice in the upper parts of the phone, there's an antenna like icon which is gray. That's your WLAN icon. When it's lighted in color, that's when your WLAN connection is up.
On the image, the icon to the left of the antenna is the 3G icon. When that's in full color you're using your 3G connection. By clicking the globe icon, you can choose what connections you'd like to turn off.

I've never seen the 3g icon change, however the Wifi lights up, and if you click on the globe it'll open connection manager which shows which connection is active.
If you are going to use Java apps which run in full screen, I suggest getting the Wifi connected first before running them, just in case.

But ain't there a way to block 3G from kicking in, so that you don't accidentally start using your data plan?
Like, when you launch the web browser, and you want it to use exclusively WLAN, and if no WLAN is available, then it will ask you if it's okay to use 3G?

Hi, I had the same problem, but resolved it. This is what I done, and appologies if this is what you've already attempted.
Once I had setup my new internet account with my home WLAN I had to add it to Group "internet", Group tab is to right of Accounts tab, then change its connections priority to 1. Ensure that you are still connected to your WLAN by seeing the WLAN ariel illuminated, goto task manager/open and End current web application if running. Re-start web application and when it asks which group to use select internet... job done. I've now got fast web access

Yes use groups then get web browser to ask which to use when launching/connecting, either your Wireless Internet or 3G/GPRS Internet.
I have an email group (for messaging) which tries WiFi first then 3G/GPRS

Excellent tips, thank you. It wasn't completely clear how to do this from the instruction book and I too noticed that my 3G icon was always active no matter what was happening.
I'd rather pay nothing for my browsing so this is perfect...

How do you get the applications to ask which group to use? I can never get mine to ask.

Some applications can be set to use a particular connection, while most will use the default internet group - so this is where you'll need to rearrange the connection types, if you don't want to pay massive amounts of money when wlan is available
