The Mail on Sunday has reported that Apple is "gagging" its UK iPhone partners and forbidding them to reveal sales figures for the device.

Stating that in a Christmas season that saw strong sales of mobile phones, but at lower price points, the newspaper suggests that sales of Apple's £269 mobile "disappointed".

According to industry insiders, Apple has told O2, the exclusive operator that offers the iPhone, and retail partner Carphone Warehouse not to tell investors the true sales statistics.

Although Steve Jobs is expected to reveal how many iPhones have been sold outside of the States in his Macworld 2008 keynote speech, it seems he will only provide an overall figure, rather than a country breakdown, something the Mail is interpreting that could be a "sign of market problems".

A senior industry source told the paper: "The iPhone has not been a huge product for either O2 or Carphone. Particularly in the current market, no one wants to buy an expensive phone with a very expensive 18-month contract".

So much for the world's most innovative, best and most feature rich phone that is five years ahead of its opponents, huh?

Couldnt be said in any better way! Americans seem to be quite different in what they like compared to the rest of the world!

I dont understand why the Nokia N95 8gb isnt more appealing than the iphone! Or any of the top mobiles released this year for that matter!

the iphone truly reflects the on what level is the u.s. mobile industry. just wondering, why apple doesnt turn to mot for example and aksed for help. ok, moto isnt of my favs, but at least, they have traditions. next to nokia, they are the last, who still know sg about mobile fones ( since /// isnt excist anymore )

My theory for shit figures is the fact it's tied to a 18month contract and you gota pay 270 ontop for the phone, no other company has the balls to do such a thing!

It's stupid really as I feel it would have been a huge success if apple just made it sim free, there would be no unlocking efforts and jail broken iphones would be common. I personally love my iphone, I paid £240 for it and have my own custom contract to use it with, it's a cracking phone and the ability to install a f**k load of software on it's amazing.

I think the only real benefit other then the 35% of contract cost apple gets from it being exclusively on o2 is the cheap internet and wifi hotspot rates for it's customers which is a must when the product is so focused on its communication access.

Personally I think apple should just release a new iphone and not have it locked to any network, make allot more sense and allot of people happy

wasn't there a rumor of a 32gb iPhone being announced soon? do you think there is any possibility they will learn from their mistakes and release it sim free.
