Exactly what do I lose when I do a firmware upgrade? If I do not have a backup, is there another method to get back the information?

what phone do you have? if you have a UIQ phone, you should make a backup first as everything will be lost, then do a restore after the update.
for the feature phones, generally speaking you don't lose anything.

I have a P1i, but for some unknown reason I am unable to make a backup as during the backup the phone cancells the operation. I guess this may be due to a third party application. So I need to know what exactly I will lose if I go ahead with the firmware upgrade. I am able to sync. my addresses, calendar and tasks.

You'll lose everything on the C drive. Ringtones, pictures, contacts, calendar entries, jots, software. Anything on the D drive (memory card, or the 4/8gb internal memory) will be safe. However any applications install on the D drive won't be found by the phone as that information was stored on the C drive, a quick re-install should fix it though.

Is there any information on the c: drive that can be transferred to the pc and then transferred to the phone after the firmware upgrade? Anyone knows why the backup procedure is not being completed?

Uncheck Unified Inbox and Multimedia on the phonecard and it should work. There is other way but only with contacts and calendar, you can back them up un your phone card withing the programs themselves. Other than that, you have to back it up on pc.

Do individual backups using PCSuite:
1 - Unified Inbox
2- Notes
3- Internal multimedia files
Make backups of Contacts, Calendar and tasks using the backup option under contact manager etc. to the memory stick.
Do not backup/restore settings and third party programs, there is a chance that some bug may creep back to the new fw. It is tedious but much safer to do the settings and install programs from scratch.

Lately the only way I manage to make backups work is first to delete the old backups from the PC drive.
Actually I move them elsewhere, but the PC Suite thinks they were deleted.
