Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA is joining the growing ranks of airlines that allow mobile phone and / or wireless internet service on flights. According to the Scandinavian airline, the new features will be offered sometime later this year
Lets hope more airlines go this route, not so much with phone use but with internet access. Certainly
Qantas (with whom I'm a frequent flyer) is also rolling wifi out later this year for all classes. yippee!

Highly dangerous and interesting move. I still wonder how they will mange to deal with the interference esecialy the electro magnetic inteference from the devices. From my understanding not only phones will be in use, even laptops when we talk about internet. The million dollar question is that How safe are we as passangers and fo how long are we to be safe?

They aren't just taking a punt you know

It's never been particularly dangerous it's just that they could never be sure until now what the specific dangers might be. So because of fear of possible dangers they have had to disallow it. Now they have enough body of evidence to assure that it's not dangerous.
Also, certain critical functions would need to be shielded, and this is something that's no doubt been underway for a while for other reasons. For example protection of onboard systems from other onboard systems, use of microwave in the galley, increasing use of wireless technology over cabled for emergency systems etc etc.
You can be sure if they are now allowing it, it's because they are now set up to do so safely!

Seems like Norwegian Air Shuttle won't offer the use of mobile phone on flights after all. You will be able to WAP/browse the net and send SMS, but no talks. The reason why they not allow talks is that it will disturb/annoy the neighbor seat too much.

This is NOT going to help the long lines infront of the lavatories...
As far as CSA and some other airlines' plans go- they will have new communications equipment that will apparently not be interfered by mobile waves - from what I've read.
