My Apologies for the length of this. My question is in the last paragraph if you wish to skip the history.
I have a P990i which I hadn't updated since last spring. It was Vodafone branded. Yesterday, I tried to use SEUS to update the firmware. I was not trying to unbrand it or do anything else other than to use SEUS as SE intended us to do.
SEUS seemed to complete successfully. It did do something since my powerup Vodafone splash screen did have a progress bar which wasn't there in the prior version. However, my phone was initially left in a state where it concluded that I did not have a SIM. In fact the SIM was just fine and works in my other phones. I then tried SEUS again. It would fail to identify the phone about 75% of the time and tell me to try again. Although it did seem to connect some times. However, at each iteration more damage was done to the P990i's software. First, it thought it didn't have a SIM. Then it would constantly reboot if powered on never even progressing to the Vodafone splash screen.
I then consulted these forums and learned of XS++ through this thread.

While XS++ could still talk to my phone and I was able to do a GDFS backup. I could not readily locate the files, FS, MAIN, and Customization which I would need to restore my P990 to working condition. I checked at SE-NSE and TOPSONY. The later appears to have the files but they have their two month rule which doesn't work if you first stumble upon them when you are in need of an urgent repair.
I returned to using SEUS since I wasn't going to make progress with XS++ without the necessary files. After a few more failed SEUS runs my phone was completely dead. It no longer powers up and it will not even indicate that it is charging when plugged in.
I finally gave up and called Vodafone. The good news for me was that they are sending me a replacement P990i since it is still under warranty and the damage was done by SEUS. Additionally, they are also throwing in a W960i for good measure.
So now as to my question, since I have learned that SEUS can kill my phone. I am going to have a new P990i and W960i tomorrow. Is there a way to use XS++ or some other tool to extract all necessary files from the phone to recover the phone to its original state if I ever get myself in the situation where SEUS does this to me again? I suspect I was very lucky with Vodafone support this time, and it might not be the same the next time. Any other suggestions as to how to protect oneself against SEUS?
