I bought an "almost new" P1i which came with some charge in the battery.

My father's checking it for me before he brings it to me overseas (soon, almost not quite enough time to send it back and get a replacement)

However when he connects the charger nothing seems to happen. The green light doesn't come on, and before long it starts flashing red to show that the battery is low. When the phone's connected to a computer with the USB cable it doesn't show any charge activity either (from which we guess that it's not just the charger)

It's difficult to believe that it's a case of the light not coming on because of deep discharge because there is enough charge to power the phone up.

I haven't yet asked him to clean the battery contacts as suggested on the SE troubleshooter because he'd prefer not to fiddle with it.

We don't have access to an alternative battery or charger to check with.

Is there any known way to reset the charging circuitry? Perhaps there's a problem with that? (That was an issue when I got my Treo 270). We have tried a master reset, or at least whatever was possible with the little power left in the battery.

Should we just give up and change the phone? (it's under warrranty, sold as-new but with an opened box)

Thanks

That's awkward.
If removing and reinserting the battery doesn't work... if turning off the phone off and placing it on charge doesn't charge ... -> that's a hardware problem and you should return the phone.
Charging is the first thing every phone must do!

Will it charge on USB connection if it is enabled?

Control Panel>Connections>USB>Alow USB charging

That might tell you if the ext charger is working properly or if it is a problem with the phone...

If the problem persists - you might want to PM 'maise' on this page http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=153093&start=225 - she has apparently returned her phone due to being unable to charge from the mains...

Thanks! Didn't know that was an option. We'll try that (if it boots and stays on long enough to get to that)
