Alright so when i first got my phone it's backlight and screen saver set up was amazing, the screen would dim and lock at the same time, but not go compleetly black, then the screen saver would turn on, so the screen would be dimed to almost 0% but the screen saver animation would be visible.

Then a day ago i decided to reset the phone after i couldn't install a language pack. Now the phone's back light turns off when it's on auto, i don't even get to see the screen saver i made. i'm quite upset about this. can anyone help me?

I have noticed this problem too.

Backlight goes to about 5% and stays there, screen doesn't turn off.

I think it might have been since I upgraded google maps recently. But that might be a red herring, I don't see how a java app that isn't even running can affect the backlight.

I've tried all the other suggestions except the dreaded master reset. I'd really like to understand what's broken before going down that route, because I know it'll only come back again....

I have found the problem!

By another coincidence I had noticed that my phone had stopped receiving SMS's. This is an old problem going back to P910 days - in fact I have a semi-bricked P910 that has too many SMS's on it, and I can't delete the files (without a master reset). It won't attach to a PC for a sync, either...

So - I have about 2000 SMS's in the inbox, 2 folders and the sent box. SMS's would only arrive on the phone after a reboot.

This, incidentally, is utter pants! Why can't SE fix this, after all this time!!!

Anyhow, after deleting a few SMS's to make some space, I can now receive them normally, PLUS, the backlight problem is fixed, the entire screen turns off too.

So I suspect that if a system app gets into difficulty, and doesn't stop running, it keeps the backlight on just that little bit.
