Call me a laggard but I've taken delivery of a P1i which has kept me excited in the last 48 hours. Unfortunately I've spent hours both on the phone and with manuals going through the e-mail configuration with guidance from my provider o2, and have not achieved success. I'm able to access the internet but can't download my e-mail. Every attempt ends with a response "POP 3 server refused to allow connection, check your mailbox username and password."

o2 tells me there is nothing else they can do; whilst they can guarantee internet access, they can't do same for e-mails.

Can you help?

Have you Enabled POP Access in your Mail. To do that Go to your Mail account from the PC, then Go to Settings, Enable POP Access.

Check your Incoming and Outgoing Server Addresses, i will show you my configuration for Gmail.

Basic Tab:
Account name: gmail (any name you wish).
Your Name: your Name
Email Address: yourname@gmail.com
Connection Type: POP3

Inbox Tab:
Incoming Server Address: pop.gmail.com
Username: Yourname
Password: ********
Download Restrictions: Just Headers ( or as you like)
Receive using Group: Internet

Outbox Tab:
Outgoing Server Address: smtp.gmail.com
use smtp Authentication: Yes
Use inbox Login Details: Yes (or as you llike)
Username: yourname
Password: ********
Send using group: Internet.

Then Go to More -> Advanced

Incoming:
Secure Connection : SSL
Incoming Mail Port: 995
Secure password authentication: No

Outgoing:
Secure connection: SSL
Outgoing mail port: 465
Use MIME encoding: No (try between Yes and No, if your mail support this).

Save the Settings and try,

Your instructions have come in very useful; it appears the right configuration has been effected. The POP 3 no longer refuses access but I'm still unable to download the email.

I don't know whether this is a network problem but the device shows 'receiving' when I click 'get and send e-mails' and stays at receiving forever.

Any reasons?

Mine did this when accessing mails - it's because I was using a "wap" internet profile as opposed to an internet one.

I'm on Vodafone, so can't give you exact settings, but you need to be using O2s proper internet APN, whatever that is...

is the username for your internet connection o2wap or o2web? o2web is the full no holds barred o2 internet.
i cant get onto my www.inbox.com pop email using o2wap but can with o2web. which email provider are you using?

The username for the internet connection is o2wap. My email provider is yahoo. Do I need to change the username from o2wap to o2web. Do I also need to change others? e.g. the account name which currently reads as SEMC GPRS.

It didnt work when I changed to o2web.

you will have to create a new Internet account

Account name (optional)
Address: mobile.o2.co.uk
Username and password required tick yes
Username o2web
Password o2web

Then set this account as a higher priority to the other.

This sounds like a problem we used to have here with O2. It is probably down to the internet access point the P1 is dialling up on.

For instance.

When a network sends you GPRS settings, the access point wap.o2.co.uk (or whatever it is) gives a walled garden effect and prevents you from accessing info from unsecure sources.

You need to ask O2 to provide you with an unsecure dial-up access point.

i am having the same problem too, i can get it all to work fine if i have a wi-fi connection active but not with anything else at all, has any of this worked at all?

It works!!! Many many many thanks!

Rishone, you were right with your configuration. The problem was with the software on the device..

I had to downloaded updates from the SE website and followed the procedure.
