Hi all,
question: Google Maps support also Location free feature, although it says on my P990 that it's not supported on my device.
However, somebody on My-Symbian just posted a screenshot of his P990 with this feature!
http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=35695
Also, my phone, instead of showing normal GoogleMaps icon, shows default UiQ application icon (a diamond).
Has anybody clue why??
Should I install it on PhoneMemory or it doesn't matter???

Because the location feature is network dependant. Google are paying your network everytime you press 1 for the information. If your network hasn't signed up for this, or isn't willing to take the cash google are offering, you won't be offered the custom version to download.
At the moment it's not possible to get it to work on the W960 as google have yet to build a model which will work on that phone.

Just tried this on my W850i (Java version) and works. I'm on O2. The "location" is taken by triangulating the phone to the cell towers in the area which gives an approximate reference of where you are. Plug that data into goole maps and presto.

Presumably, this depends on weather or not your device / network supports this information. The java app needs to read this data somehow, most likely it queries the phone which gets it from the network.

If it's not working, check with your operator perhaps to see if they support this feature?

hmm, just thinking, as am on O2 and the iPhone is on O2 which is the main user of this feature, perhaps this is why it is enabled?

Is this working for any other people on different networks? Would be curious to know.

I remember when I first joined 3, they had something similar as part of their own services. You could access a map on the 3 portal which could use your "current location" (the triangulation to cell towers) and would give you a map of the area you are in. Worked quite well too, cost was 25p a search.

Cheers,

Seems to me that it's phone, rather than network dependant, as my p1 is also on o2 and the location feature does NOT work with the latest vesion of gm for symbian phones.
