Why to pay license fees to Symbian if cellphone vendors could go for open source (free) Linux?

Two biggest in the world corporations, that are producing consumer electronics equipment: Sony and Matsushita Electric Industrial (also known under brands like Panasonic), have agreed on cooperation in Linux area to ensure interoperability and to better face competition from Microsoft.

This agreement means, that mobile Linux will find its way to other than personal computers equipment like digital cameras, DVD recorders/players, set top boxes, etc.

Since Symbian is not an open source and is controled mainly by Nokia, Sony plans (as rumor says) to replace it in its cellphones with mobile Linux. Please note that Sharp already sells several models of Linux based PDAs.

The fact is that mobile Linux is already a very mature operating system, that is providing full featured PDA functionality, therefore adding cellphone modules would be very easy way to build REALLY open smartphones...

The only rumour here is the one you have started! If you read the official press release it makes it quite clear it is for simple yet increasingly complex units such as DVD and hi fi to make usage standardised. Symbian is not controlled by one member of the group at all! This post was posted from a T68i

Nokia controls Series 40 and 60 of Symbian. They lay no claim over the rest of the Symbian platforms, including 7.0. That's why the rumour makes no sense, unless the P900 suddenly wanted to switch to Series x0.

I don't believe that rumour. If SonyEricsson would change from Symbian which I find highly unlikely. My bet would be on PalmOS. Sony is a heavy supporter of PalmOS.

what if they keep symbian for the Pxxx serie and use linux on there other phones? execept nec. phillips, IBM and sansumg are alsow intrested in linux operating system.
