No phone should work without a SIM card, this is one of the basic security rules of GSM (meant to deter theft and protect you from others running up your bill). The only exception is you are able to call 112, 911, 999 and other emergency numbers without a SIM.
True, a smartphone in flight mode without SIM will not be able to run up your bill, but that is only one special case.
The basic security software of any phone (smart or otherwise) is intgerated tightly with the SIM concept and hence SE (or Nokia or anyone) will not risk any potential compromise of that security software(not matter how small a risk it is), for that one special case that will only happen one in a million times.

interesting, takk
even, since 6630 nokia offers to use the fone in offline mode aswell and i love it. cos then u can still make pix, use the apps like navi, wlan etc and also some s40 fones like 6233, 6300 etc has got this feature aswell... imo its really useful.

SE smartphone will work just fine in offline mode (i.e. flight mode). But only if you have a SIM in the phone.
Are you saying the Nokia phones work offline (i.e. flight mode) without any SIM card ?

yes, since ages... it started first with the s60 symbians, then later with s40 fones. only radio and visual radio wont work in offline mode, but all other apps and features are working as in general mode.
ps: and s80 fones like aswell

Crap - itīs only your sim-card can make bills bigger(higher), not phone itself!
@Boba
Itīs something that SE must improve in next edition of smartphones, or if possible with new FW for old ones

it would have been made since ages imo. lets say at w950, u could use it as a simple mp3 player if it is or w960. the p series could be a kind of "pda" if flightmode would been offered.

I'm wondering why you would have a phone and not have a sim card in it?
I don't think I have ever not had a sim card in a phone I was using

cos imo its a useful feature. maybe u dont need it, but lets say u have some fones around u ( like amny of us ) and u wanna use navi, but u have your sim in anothet fones, still u stick to it to the one with the navi. then u can still have it with u. or how many of u love the wm feature, but u need the card in your other fone, cos of any reasons. my question was generally ment, cos i was wondering, that se didnt made any steps in this direction... ( yet )

@ masseur
You have a point there, but for some reasons, you can have 2 phones and only one card, card may become broken (happened to me, ones) and still want get some numbers. You could do that with old Ericsson phones by pressing some code. Maybe I like only camera and mediaplayer or games, not using calls possibilities at all? Donīt know. Find own reasons
