" "Madeleine McCann, appears to have spurred parents into buying mobile phones for children as young as four. A survey carried out by Mobile locators found that safety-conscious parents are buying mobile phones for their children. When asked how old their child was when they were first given a mobile phone, two per cent said they had bought their child a mobile at the age of four. That compares against 16 per cent who said 10 years old; 20 per cent who said 11; and 14 per cent who said 12. Overall 57 per cent of parents surveyed had invested in a mobile phone for their offspring. Boss of Mobile locators, Jonathan Cook, said the service, which began in 2003, uses triangulation to locate a person's mobile phone in the UK. Curiously, Cook wasn't promoting his company's more consumer orientated product, Trace mobile, which costs ?5 per month for 10 searches. The service does remind the INQ of MobileSOS, a service inspired by missing estate agent, Suzy Lamplugh. MobileSOS works by making a simple voice call which triggers an SOS message to be sent to loved ones via text, voice and email. The reason why a high number of parents – 43 per cent – won't buy the phones could well be that government boffin, Sir William Stewart, specifically advised parents not to give the phones to children under the age of eight. He also said that those aged between eight and 14 should use them only "when absolutely necessary." "
