I have the P1i and when people phone me that i havent got in my contacts no name appears(obviously) just there number.
If i then want to add them to my contacts i add there name etc BUT when i check my call records the number is still present and not the name, if the person then calls again the name shows up as it should.
My question is, is there a way to update the name automatically once ive added it to my contacts?

No, there isn't.
Unlike in some other phones, your old records will not be replaced with the contact's name and will remain as numbers.

yeah, that's a stupid overlook from SE. All my Nokia smart phones had the feature to replace the numbers in the call log...

As long as the call list isn't refreshed after you added it to the Contacts,it's normal to still show you the numer, not the name.
