X1 Xperia - Thread G700 / G900 - ThreadW980i - ThreadC702 / C902 - Thread

Yesterday was quite a big day for SE which witnessed the announcement of some higher-end devices.

An announcement like this has been a long time coming - too long for some - as for the past couple years SE has been concentrating on building up its market share with cheaper phones.

Has it been worth the wait?

I'm concerned that the wait isn't really over - SE need to have a bigger presence in the high-end market now, rather than in the autumn.

For example, the X1 - it's a great looking device, but as impressive as the specs seem now, they are only what every other Windows Mobile handset will be touting by the time it comes to market. HTC - who will be making the X1 in any case - will probably be releasing the follow up to their Tytn II at the same sort of time, and the improved screen and video are just the sort of upgrades they're bound to make to the "Tytn III" - so the X1 could end up with some uncomfortably close competition, unless they get it out the door much earlier.

All of that said, I'm delighted SE are getting into Windows Mobile, the truth is it's a great OS. Hopefully more people around here will recognise that, when SE convinces them to try it.

The "G" series phones are weird - basically rehashes of previous UIQ3 phones, but we're not supposed to call them smartphones, presumably because they're pug-ugly and a bit of an embarrassment to the smartphone line...

Summary
======
About XPERIA - I'm confused (IT's very sleek, but I'm not into Windows Mobile Much, but I kinda like it :-s )
About Cybershots - I like the idea of being able to shoot with GPS location integrated. but about the looks, I really dislike 'em.
About G series - It's a great start. Symbian for mid-range sets. If it continues, developers will be more and more interested to develop softwares for the platform and can be a good rival for those Keypad and non-touchscreen based S60 *Multimedia Computers* in a long term.
About W980 - Looks like a impressive device, Radio w/o antenna is a gr8 start so is integrated FM transmitter, let's see where it goes.

That's about it

Honestly I am kinda disappointed with SE's performance.

While they sure presented some nifty looking new phones they IMHO still did not find back to their core compentencies in the field of technology leadership.

I would prefer a general availability of true GPS receivers, HSDPA (WTF G-series lacking decent OTA connectivity?!) in a small form factor.

Judging from reallife video shots the XPERIA seems to me to be a nice concept study long before market launch. WM6 needs to prove whether it can compete to the stability and user-friendliness SE managed to reach with its UIQ-line of handsets.

All-in-all I find Nokia's current range from a technical standpoint more impressive than SE's offering.

Cheers

Agreed.

G-series: Great to have UIQ with joystick control and traditional keypad. But why no 3,5G and no GPS?
C-series: Why GPS on C702 but not on C902? C902 also has way too small screen IMO.
And the buttons-and-d-pad-area of X1 really looks horrid.

It seems to me that SE have a hard time getting it right all the way. I don't feel I found my new future phone yesterday. Which I had hoped to do.
