> How much will it cost to repair my car?
Bookmark topic
Apologies for the rather random thread, I'm hoping there's a few more mechanically-minded people than me out there that could help me out.
My car has started making tapping/ticking noises whilst running, which I have a nasty feeling is the tappets. I've heard this is rather expensive to fix, how much will it cost me to get this done? And, what else could it be if it's not the tappets?
I've got an ageing 2000 W reg Vauxhall Corsa which is due a service, and just weighing up if it's worth doing it and getting the engine repaired or cutting my losses, selling the car and putting what little I get for it towards a newer motor! My budget's rather tight though
Any help appreciated

Have you checked your oil level lately? That can cause ticking tappets.
Ticking tappets used to be quite common on old S series engines (mid 80s).

I used to adjust my own tappets mate until I bought a car with self adjusting tappets!
As JC said The older Vauxhall's were renowned for it especially my dads Nova!
I cant see it being too expensive to fix mate as normally it is just a matter of readjusting the clearances!
Unless I'm wrong!

Can you say when is the sound occurring. And describe it more detailed.

noisy tappets are nothing to worry about....although can be quite annoying....if u wanna solve it totally you'd need new tappets which can be quite costly as its not really worth it
I'd suggest doing an oil change using some engine flush treatment before it and then afterwards use some HLA valve lifter treatment....it will almost totally irradicate the noise.....altough the problem may come back after a while

If you decide on buying a new motor... I'm selling a Dark Blue 51 Plate Corsa if you're interested?

Sounds like it may not be as bad as I thought then! I'll see what they say when I can afford to get the car serviced.
The sound is like a ticking sound usually on acceleration, though it's slightly audible on tickover too.
@kk - I might be interested in that Corsa, though funds are very tight - what price would you be looking for? What spec level is it, full service history? Any faults/issues?

hmmm, on accelleration....i'm not too sure about that....but usually older or higher mileage cars will do it on idle till they warm up a bit....try what i said....its not hard to do an oil change in less than an hour providing you have a bucket or somewhere for the old oil
Be careful asking about it when you take it for a service as some places will say anything to screw you for more cash

I'm not familiar with the valve arrangement on Vauxhalls but I've set more tappets on Hondas than I've had hot dinners
If you have Hydraulic Tappets then a fix could be very expensive, better to sell the car in the long run. If the valve clearances are manually adjustable then there's no problem, it'll just cost you a rocker cover gasket and 1/2 hr labour on a 4cyl engine.
Don't leave it too long before the next service. When I was an apprentice I neglected adjusting the valve clearances on my Mitsubishi Sigma and when I eventually tried, excessive wear on the rockers and rocker shafts resulted in inconsistant clearances. This caused a burnt valve and I had to pull the head off and do a valve grind, clean up the valve seats, etc, etc... not the sort of stuff you want to pay some one to do if you can avoid it - $$$!
Hope this helps!
