K850i....Underneath settings>general>Update service>Search for update....What is the sense of offering this as a phone feature when it is basically useless???It would make more sense to enable this feature as some people aren't able to use the SEUS software.
Just alil rant....

in what way is it useless?
it has worked perfectly on the few phones I have done this firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) update on

Well maybe not useless..but until now i've seen updates arrive on SEUS way earlier than on FOTA.. which kinda makes it useless. Not only that but downloading the firmware via the phones internet can be quite expensive for most.

the last phone I updated was a K850 (when I debranded it) and in fact the firmware it downloaded (038) wasn't available on seus, so it can work both ways.
you're right though, at around 4mb (as I recall) it can be expensive if you're not on an unlimited data plan (good 'ol t-mobile web'n'walk!)

Regardless of data costs, it is much simpler to just check for software updates, and something actually be there...lol...I think 1 time since I have had the phone, this has actually had something available. I have had the K850i since it was pseudo available in the united states. So to me (personal opinion here) it would make more sense to upload both to seus and to the other servers at the same time. 038 release was for branded phones. And the updates would come from the branded phone company not right from sony directly.

Maybe this FOTA feature is redundant because it's never been able to update my firmware. It just says I have the latest already. Maybe it's because I always HAVE the latest! Go figure.

I have used FOTA ones or twice on my earlier K800i phone, 1 or two years ago and it worked nice.
I suppose the options is there mainly for those not so handy with computers (not that its hard to update through SEUS)
but you know - there are people that only use the computer to check for mails

It would be a nice feature yes, IF there was ever any updates available.
