there are many versions of this sort of software for P1i etc,

are they actually needed as they are on PC
has anyone ever experienced a virus on their uiq mobile?

If you didn't have antivirus and got a virus somehow(not sure how either?) can it not be dealt with easily, ie how severe are the viruses.

thanks

There are several viruses in the wild for smartphones but all of them need user action to be installed. Then again, the Symbian platform is very security oriented thus for the time being you are safe, if using the phone wisely. IMO there is no need for antivirus app.
Consequences of infection are continuous restarting of the device rendering it useless, calling premium rate numbers etc. F-Secure has very good article about it, tho over reacted a bit

whoa that settles it,
i can't believe there are about 9 companies out their selling this useless software, just to give peace of mind to paranoid people while feeding their paranoia, they probably have to pay for it every 6 or 12 months too. It takes up storage and memory for nothing.

I could probably write a program that just flashes up a picture at start up that says "scan complete, no viruses present.", say it takes up almost no memory or storage, charge half of what everyone else is and make a lot of money!

It's my idea hands off lol

Virus busters are not likely to recognize these, as they do not propagate themselves in the classical virus ways, rather by utilizing people's urge to get stuff for free.

I take your point... and I agree. Hence, the link (which highlights this point towards the end of the article). However, I think there is a subtle difference as the user has to actively installl the software and go through hoops to do so.... as opposed to picking up a virus by innocently opening an email attachment, for example.

Put it this way, even Vista wouldn't be infected if there is no installing of cracked software. Day to day use there is no need to have antivir on WV.

Just my op.
