I tried 3 payg earlier this month on an unbranded (via XS and TopSony firmaware) w880i (the 3 APN settings were already in the generic firmware). I paid £9.99 for the SIM which gave me £10 credit with which I bought an internet add-on for £5 and the TV add-on for £2.
I was very impressed, it all worked really well.

I didn't come across any blocked sites. I don't do that much surfing though.
The things I wanted to work worked - stuff like bbc, google mail/maps/reader, sky by mobile, youtube, vtap, imdb, ebuddy

I accessed it through My3 which has the rather bizarre bookmark
http://mobile.three.co.uk/837_sc
I don't know if that page is optimised for a particular phone
