I have noticed something rather odd. Where i live i have a solid 3G signal on O2 and also EDGE coverage. What i have found strange is when i had my K800i i found 3G not really all that fast and downloading and even general browsing was quite slow. Now i have a Nokia 6300 i get EDGE and i have found it faster. Pages load really fast when browsing which never did with 3G. Does anyone else have experience of this or is it just just networks getting slow at busy times. Though i have never had connection problems on O2.

@Seanyb2
Well the max download speed for 3G is 384kbps and i believe the max download speed for Edge is around 280kbps so whilst that isn't a huge difference. You need to take into account the processor and Web browser in the K800 v 6300 and that could also account for the difference you see in responses as well as just the speed difference IMO.

perhaps but I find my own K800 browser to be zippy enough on 3G.
You might be falling back to gsm when 3G signal strength is poor. You may be in an area that has better GSM coverage (EDGE runs over GSM) than 3G coverage.

No. My O2 3G signal in the area i live is more solid than GSM. It hardly even fluctuates on 3G even downstairs and it never switches between the two. If i selected 3G and GSM in the menu it would only lock onto 3G. Plus EDGE here too is very good im actually quite lucky where i am getting such a solid reception. O2 and T Mobile have best 3G where i live Vodafone has none Orange is about 2 bars at best and 3 is average. But i still find my EDGE to be more zippy. Honest.

fair enough. Don't know what the problem might be? I haven no problems with 3G, though some areas I do. But when I have good 3G strength the browser is fine. Mind you if I'm viewing full html websites with lot's of pic's I admit it's slower (but not painful - still well usable) but I usually use Opera Mini for that.
Dogmann is probably right about browsers, as much as I hate to admit it SE browsers are not as good as Nokia.

Yeah i use Opera which was already installed in the phone when i got it. Nokia are faster yes i agree. One thing i noticed with SE browsers was some things would never load properly but they would on Nokia. But i have experienced very fast 3G on O2 with other phones but found the K800i slow and it had latest firmware too. Oh well.

try opera mini 4, it's quite a bit better than inbuilt browser, and comparable to Nokia (better in some cases) in terms of web page display.

This convo sounds like a very family (1yr old) conversations of EDGE vs UMTS doesn't it

.
Other things to consider. Network signal strength (high) ensures the quality of the data (bits being streamed to & from the device), not so much the speed of the data. That said we all know the LOW quality of the signal does affect the speed of data ... BUT NOT so simply. Its low quality signal strength that affects data bits being streamed. Some data IS MISSED or currupted because not all the data packet arrived to its destination, so it must be resent. Low signal strength increases the amount of RESENT data packets (a LOT) so data is slow. Good to excellent signal strength ensures data packets are not currupted. However the other side of this is JUST because you have FULL signal strength this doesn't ensure fast data speeds. Remember there IS a limit to the number of data connections PER network tower. And if a tower has its full of data connections (say all tethering or surfing; not to mention voice over IP calls - 3G calls, not jsut video calls) then EVERYBODY using that data everyone gets a slower stream.
Other things to consider. Clear cookies & cache of the internal & Opera Mini browser. Reboot the phone - helps to choose a less busy tower (even for network to self resolve GGSN issues; on UMTS/HSDPA I'm not even sure that a GGSN is even used anymore).

The old edge versus 3G argument! I don't think EDGE can compete with 3G/HSDPA ultimately. In a sense HSDPA is to 3G what EDGE is to GSM.
EDGE is the best you will ever get out of GSM, whereas there is still room for more improvement to 3G (further improvements to HSDPA are planned).
But I'm sure someone will have a different view point

lol
I'm with you this time around. I've finally gotten to experience 3G/HSDPA this past weekend first hand! While upgrading to the K850i its opened my eyes.
MMS, Browsing, Email are ALL so much faster.
Goes the saying - They won't know what their missing until they have it.
