A potentially lethal stun gun disguised as a mobile phone has been recovered from a city's streets.

The illegal weapon, similar in appearance to a Sony Ericsson W700, can deliver a 900,000-volt electric shock when its small metal prongs are placed on a target.

The shock is enough to cause serious injury, said Nottinghamshire Police, and could even prove fatal for a small child or elderly victim.

The battery-powered weapon looks innocuous but a closer inspection reveals its real use - the button usually designated to stop calls displays the word 'stun'.

It was seized by officers in the Hyson Green area of Nottingham on February 28.

Detective Sergeant Dave Bola, of Notts Police, said: "It's a shock that we found it. We are always concerned about finding different types of weapons on the streets. This could potentially kill someone."

It is not the first weapon of its kind to be seized in the country, said Mr Bola.

A scan of the internet sees mobile phone stun guns widely reviewed and advertised.

On one product, a reviewer said: "The phone does not work as a normal phone at all, but looks similar enough that no one should give it a second glance. It packs a powerful 800,000 volt electric shock, which should knock any attacker off their feet."
