When you update the firmware your phone is as it would be if you'd just bought it apart form the contents of the memory stick.

This is due to the fact that the new firmware is applied as a clean install, unlike upgrading your pc's OS, there is no option to transfer your files and settings. Therefore you will need to reset everything, includig your contacts, callender entries, message settings, and of course your 3rd party applications.

Fortunately, the pcsuite helps here - giving you the ability to back uo your data prior to updating. You can also back up your contacts and calender via the built in software (contacts/calender manager).

so if i use the back up features of PCsuite will mean I don't need to lose/reinstall anything?

You will have all the content back like messages, calendar etc. if you choose to back it up, as well as most settings, Web bookmarks.
But the apps which you have on Memory Stick (you'll not lose it) you'll have to reinstall again, all (besides default SE conent)

Just remember it's better to take out the Memory Stick while updating,
also Java apps are usually not backed up, like Opera Mini.
