> EDGE - What do the different 'Class' mean?

I have searched Wiki, Google, etc... but haven't really found a simple explanation.
There are different Classes of EDGE:
Most SE are Class 10
Latest Nokia are Class 32
Motorola are Class 12
What are the actual speeds for each Class?
How many Classes are there?
What about at the network level? Do networks offer the full potential speed and then it's up to the individual handsets to try and achieve that speed? Or do they restrict speed up to a certain class?
Here in India, there is no 3G, only EDGE. I am trying to buy a handset that offers fastest possible connection speed subject to what the network actually offer.
