A friend of mine will be getting a wimax connection soon. The company gives the wimax "device" for 100$. He wants to know that if he has a laptop that already has "Wimax" internet support, will he still need that device for 100$?

So your friend might need the Wimax base station..

As long as the built in wimax or wimax card (as it's more likely to be) is compatible with the provider (which it should be in theory at least) then no, he won't need the extra box.
But it would be wise to contact the laptop / wimax card manufacturer to check. If he contacts the wimax provider, they'll probably say "no, it's not compatible" just to sell him the box!
