Panasonic revealed plans to include plasma video displays for cell phones to use with AT&T's recently announced Mobile TV service. "For nearly a decade, Panasonic's engineers have been secretly working on a thin, lightweight low-voltage compact plasma display," stated Mark Balsama, Panasonic Communication Systems Group Marketing Manager. "Many of our new phones will have vibrant color plasma screens that can run on just 1.5 volts and won't require any additional wiring or special power supplies. We'll be able to put plasma in cell phones, business phones, consumer phones, corded phones, cordless phones, and even door intercom monitors and fax machines. We will revolutionize the consumer electronics business, as Panasonic has done many times before."

I would be great indeed because from my point of view it consume much power Its said to use plus or minus 1.5 volts.And if we consider the time spent on developing such a device one may wonder how many years would it take to upgrade that?

The price will come down eventually but does it have anything over the new OLED displays that consume minimal power and that are also wafer thin?

Isnt LCD better than Plasma? Plasma TV's are now getting obsolete

Nah, LCD and Plasma have their pros and cons but both are now very very similar in most aspects (apart from the way they work). I just don't see the point in spending several years developing a small plasma screen when LCDs work just fine and at the right resolution look just as good AND they are already well developed!

It seems like a huge waste of money and their development probably extends from the time when a plasma TV screen was the TV screen to have (LCDs didn't seem so popular in the beginning of flat screen TVs). They probably released it now so they can hopefully still cash in on those that still think Plasma is the best and don't know LCD is just as good.

i watched a TV show that tells LCD is better now. Because Plasma TV's doesnt last the long as LCDs. They tell that the plasma in the screen can worn of in a few years. Not like LCDs, but what I like about Plasma is when you look at it, in every angle, you see the pictures clearly and with the right colors, not like with LCD if you look it to the sides, etc it will not display the right color.

Nothing beats OLED on the image quality and power consumption ratio. plasma screens are also prone to screen burns after years and has estimated lifespan of 27 years(6 hours per day usage). TFT LCD displays are still best of both worlds imo.

@belialwafu:

I've just seen Sony's 70" SXRD LCD TV on one of the stores in our country, and tbh the screen is fantastic. i'm at a very bad angle position viewing the image rendered by the tv but the picture remains great and vivid though i can't say if it's better than plasma given the viewing angle.
