> Text Messages not showing

For some reason my text messages are no longer showing up when they are being sent to me?
I only discovered it today as i went to write a new message and saw that i had 10 unread messages, now i had no message alert tone and no notification of any new message on the main screen or little envelope icon at the top, as i said the only way i know im getting messages is to go into the message inbox.
Anyone got any ideas as to why please?
