Hello,

I've just read this on the O2 website

Quote:

2. How does Media Messaging work?
Media Messaging is a data application and it uses GPRS to send and receive images and sounds to and from compatible mobiles. GPRS allows faster processing of the messages. Usually you would need to subscribe to use GPRS but there is no additional subscription for Media Messaging.

3. Will I be able to use Media Messaging straight away?
If you are an O2 customer and bought your mobile through an O2 recognised dealer you will be able to use Media Messaging immediately. If you received your mobile from a different source then you will need to contact us and ask for Media Messaging capability to be applied to your service - please use your normal contact method to let us know if you need this adding.

So basically they are saying that I must use GPRS & ask them to add the MMS capability to my phone.

I'm confused because I've just sent an MMS using GSM WAP with http://nowmms.com/ which totally contradicts the info on the O2 website.

Have I done something wrong & am gonna get charge the earth? Why should I use GPRS & why should I use their mms gateway?

Well, I can successfully send MMS messages from my O2 Online PAYG simcard across both GSM Wap AND GPRS Wap. I don't get charged for sending it across GSM Wap because it gets included in the free Wap minutes I get with it. I'm hoping that this will still be the case once MMS becomes chargeable on the 1st of Feb but have a sneaky suspicion that it won't because sending it across either GSM or GPRS the same MMSC address is used (namely -> mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk) and so they may be able to tell from the logs

I see. So basically O2 haven't fully set up mms yet? So when 1st of feb comes, I mite not be able to use the method I described above?

Well no, it's not a case of O2 not having setup MMS yet. O2 in the UK is currently offering free MMS to it's users to trial it (work out expected usage so that they can get enough equipment to handle traffic, get rid of any other bugs etc etc). Some of the other UK networks are also doing the same.

I'm don't know for sure about NowMMS and when we reach 1st of Feb but since the MMS message first has to originate from your O2 handset and travel across O2's networks, to reach NowMMS's server, I think they will be able to tell somehow.

At the moment we are using gsm/gprs to send an mms. When O2 starts charging for mms, will we have to pay the 40p for the message + the gprs data cost????

Sorry for being a bit slow, but....

why do they need to install new hardware estimate usage, when mms is just sent over gprs, for which they already have hardware etc in place

@vibez

As far as I know the messages will be fully sent on GPRS which has previously not been used on PrePay. As such there is a possibility that the GPRS usage will increase quite a lot, not only from all new PrePay people but also conceivably from contract users using it for GPRS.

As such O2 need to estimate how many people have camera phones and will be using it so we can try and eliminate problems with the network being busy when you try and send messages, etc.

Ok but at the moment i'm sending them using GSM. Are you saying that I wont be able to do this soon?

But if I can, will it cost me more using gsm or gprs?

If it still does work i reckon it will be cheaper via wap gsm rather than gprs This post was posted from a T300

I wouldn't have thought you would be sending them via GSM, that would be very unusual and, iirc, not possible.

When you try sending one, check to see if there is a flashing G on the screen - that means GPRS.

However, if you are somehow managing to send via GSM then yes, you will need to change to GPRS.
