I've got a sony car stereo (MEX3600u) with a USB input which I connect to my ipod, I am thinking about getting a SE w880i or a SE w890i to use as my main mp3 player. I need to know if it will be compatable with my car stereo via the USB connection and will allow me to play my music through it.

No, the usb will only possibly charge your phone but nothing else. If you want to use your phone then you will need to stream it via bluetooth. This is what you need .

Thanks for your reply, do any walkman phones work with the stereo via USB?

Well if you don't want to use Bluetooth for streaming music you can use this cable from
the MMC-70

I use mmc-60 with an FM transmitter (in-built into the car, with RCA inputs).
I have a Sony mini-system with USB mp3 input, it doesn't work with my K800 which is frustrating. It seems SE haven't fully implemented USB Storage Protocol otherwise it would be recognised by the Stereo as USB memory (with mp3's). So I'm inclined to think the Sony car stereo won't work with SE phones either.
HOwever that said, if later SE phones have properly implemented the USB storage protocol it should work.

have you tried setting the default USB mode to mass storage?
Thats might work, the only problem is that you will not be able to use the phone as the one switches off in mass storage mode.

I'm not a novice at this stuff
On K800 there is no defaut usb mode, to use the phone as mass storage you plug the cable in and a prompt asks you to select file transfer or phone mode. Select file transfer, and the phone resarts in usb storage mode.
I'd have to be pretty stupid to miss that. Regardless of whether I select file transfer or phone mode, my Sony mini-system still doesn't recognise the phone as usb mass storage. Since every other usb key and usb MP3 player I've tried on this thing works fine, I can only assume SE have not implemented the full USB Mass Storage protocol on the K800.

There was a thread here some months ago where a member said that they connected thier P1i to thier car stereo using just the USB cable. During the discussion it was decided that if your memory card is able to be recognised as a Mass Storage Device then it should work. A200 phones such as K630/V640, K660, K850, W890, W910, etc should work ok if you get the MSD option appear on the screen when you plug in.
Edit: here's the thread:
