Flashing = this is when you upgrade your phone's either FS or MAIN with a third party software(xs++, far manager, wotan, kk, etc.)

What @JiSm can be seen as a basic view of what flashing is (although a better comparison to updating windows would be upgrading from Vista to Vista SP1, although flashing allows the user to select the firmware - making it possible to downgrade as well as the usual upgrade)

You can upgrade your phone to the latest available firmware two main ways:

-Firstly you can use the Sony Ericsson Update Service (SEUS) which will automatically update your phone to the newest available firmware version and also upgrade the CID to the latest version which leads to reduced compatibility with phone modification tools in the case of db2020 phones, so be careful when using seus.

-Secondly there are a number of phone flashing/modification tools such as xs++, setool2lite and also plugins for far manager that you can use to flash your phone to any available firmware (information for these tools are available through a quick search here at esato and also over on se-nse.net) These phone modification tools also allow you to add extra functionality through patches along with direct access to the phones file system

Hopefully this explains the basics of flashing and the phone modification tools, although for more information and tutorials regarding this
