Nokia is preparing a Linux-based mobile phones to the market.

The company's Financial Rick Simonson said on Monday, JP Morgan Chase seminar in Boston that "definitely moving in that direction."

Simonson did not take a position on the Linux version will be used. -- I will leave the decision making technology, he said.

He did not take a position on it, the source of the Nokia Linux-based Google launched by Android-architecture projects.

Simonsonin According to the use of Linux will be extremely important. The company already sells a Linux-based Internet access devices, such as the Nokia 800 and 810 handheld PCs.

Linux-income mobile phones, however, be preceded by the new wholesale Symbian Series 60-based Nokia and mobile phones. Nokia is a major owner of Symbian. Symbian has recently reduced its ohjelmistolisenssiensä prices. Google intends to distribute its own Android ships for free.

about time too!

they've got all this history and experience in linux and open source, so it would be illogical(and a shame) if they restricted it to their internet tablets.

IF nokia ported s60 to linux then the theory of linux being number 1 in mobile will become a reality not to mention LIMO and ADROID is in the making.

Free, Open, Easy to use??

1> NOT FREE - only the SOURCE code is free to grab, play with, but also Nokia *MUST* distribute it to the OPEN source - competition will never be the same again; kiss goodbye to great uniqueness. Its all going to be in the hardware and in Themes.

2> Open - yup even to tweak. I still have yet to understand how HTC, Motorola, Samsung and others plan to support modified filesystems by end users Android phones when support is needed. Will Google front that cost - OS Firmware upgrades?

3> Easy to use? Are you NUTS! Linux on the desktop just recently come of age where the average end user (not power user, just a user) can install apps (remember before YUM?) uninstall and modify themes. However I STILL find it arcane to locate sofware that I wish to use, EVEN with Ubuntu 8.04 - its looking better, but still got a long way to go to be on par with WinXP or Mac.

Andriod, the Linux OS for phones thats getting all the hype has the most HORRIBLE application menu layout! Destroys the screen real-estate, in my opinion.

We'll see just how easy linux is to the end user, Linux is still made for geeks by geeks.

that doesn't say much for you if OAP's and 5 year old kids can find it easy to use.
i mean, how difficult must it be to follow these steps:
-fire up application called 'add/remove software'
-type in search bar for software you want to find or simply scroll down the list. it's even got the software listed under the various headings such as 'games', 'internet', 'programming', etc.
-click 'install'.

i suppose fiddling about in the windows registry for hours/days to get applications to run and getting rid of trojans/viruses/worms is just a simple task for the average user, isn't it? i think not! people are moving to linux from windows because they want something thats much easier and less tiresome to use.

as for the mac, apple suck. i'm never going to buy any apple product and be forced into their 'you can choose any company you like as long as it's apple' philosophy. i wonder how well OSX may work if apple weren't so anally retentive with their need to control everything.

Free? As in speech I assume. So they have to publish their source code? Will they also publish the source for whatever GUI they would select? Maybe they would port the S60 UI but don't expect any more than what they provide free with the current Symbian-based S60 SDK.
And easy to use? The kernel has nothing to do with the GUI.

@Brightspark,

You must know that not ALL linux programs install as expected, neither does Windows (which I'm VERY familiar with), or even OS X. OS X is a very successful OS - Apple is just as anal as the FREE Linux app community or Windows just in many different ways & views. They all HAVE TO be in order for any of those platforms to be successful. Apple makes GREAT products & software and for you to not realize just how important they are to the software or computing industry; I'd say your blind to history & current events. Ever wonder how Linux got a persist taskbar?? Menu's seem to be VERY simular.

When patching applications on Linux desktop I feel like I did when I first tried learning to TS WinRegistry! Internal & External drive nomenclature is very arcane to the average user. Running an app seems simple, but simple things like launching a game the first time (ones shipped with Ubuntu for install) doesn't even give me a menu or instructions for 1st launch the game already started, lol.

Easy to use the first time for simplistic takes, setup & send/receive email, surf internet, install plugins for browser. Now try to install a plugin for Divx I did TWO that the OS found FOR me and although both installed, neither worked even after a reboot. The codec is correct as it plays in Windows, but not in Ubuntu Linux on the same PC holding the sourced content.

My worry of Linux on the smartphone from what I've seen thus far ...
- Customization will be FULLY allowed, however if its done to the point the user cannot restore original settings or uninstall several seperate componenets, then how is THIS going to be supported.
- I have a feeling that all the varying manufacturers, will have too much seperation of the same OS when its related via a GUI, users may have a hard time switching from device to device from different Manufacturers using the same platform OS.
* S60 whether on Nokia or Samsung or LG is VERY similar. Same with UIQ (Z8/Z10 differing from P1i or P990/P910/P900). I'd say the same for MotoMAGX by Motorola (Linux) through their various phones. Improvements have been made yet currently no apps are written natively for Linux; but rather for Java.

PS please carefully read my posts before quoting as I've already said installing apps on Linux destop is simple - yet NOT for the varying range of apps that a wide range of users WISH to use. Not ALL apps on ANY platform , ALWAYS installs simply and just works there ARE problems where tweaking is necessary.

i suppose it all came from apple, eh? if you can name anything innovative, anything at all, that originally came from apple and was subsequently used for other OSs, i will eat my hat. luckily, there's no chance of that ever happening.
contrastingly, there are lots of things which apple stole from linux.
