I believe Jpeg is better as it takes less space
at 256 colours it is sufficent!

You couldn't do
http://www.jalu.co.uk/pictures/christmascard.gif as a .jpg for one!

as far as compression goes, gifs are better for pics made up of solid areas of colour (logos, for instance) and jpgs are better for photos.
