> Lg Viewty after my P1i?
Bookmark topic
Hi
I'm looking for a successor to my P1i, and just found out that the viewty is at 280€ now. I would like to know if it would really be an downgrade from my P1i, which I use a lot and I am very very happy with, I'm just bored by the little screen... I'm not patient enough to wait for the X1 (or HTC Raphael) with an acceptable price (i.e. Q1 2009?), and I'm not sure about the Diamond
So, few questions about the viewty:
1- How is the qwerty keyboard?
2- Is push mail possible?
3- Is there google calendar synchronisation?
4- Is there messenging/VOIP?
5- Can it be paired with a bluetooth GPS?
6- Can I run Opera mini with touch zooming etc. ?
7- Can I put more than 2Gb memory stick (8Gb?)
8- Anything I should know?
Thanks for your answers

1) If you enjoy the functionality of the P1 Keyboard, you'll be dissapointed by the viewty. While its touch-keyboard ability may seem nice, you cannot glide your fingers across it without catching the other keys as easily, and you must press each key on its own. There's also much more chance of hitting the wrong one. Also, as its not a multi-touch screen, usually your other finger may also be touching the screen and so it will not register which keys you've pressed.
2) Viewty does have email capabilities for POP and IMAP - IMAP being what you'd use for Push Mail with a service such as Gmail.
3) Google Calendar Sync is not possible out of the box, but it can be done using a third party service.

4) As the phone has JAVA, you can use third party software such as eBuddy to access IM Services such as MSN, Aim, etc. However, You'll need to arrange a flat-fee internet package with your mobile service provider as Internet is required. VO/IP is disabled in all of the mobile network providers I know of in the UK, as it wouldnt be beneficial to the company. They want you to make calls through their service.
5) The viewty will connect via bluetooth to an external gps reciever. There are quite a few programs out there which you can use for sat nav, such as mobile gmaps, navfun, navigami.
Nav4all and amazegps are also working on viewty compatible versions of there software too.
6) As said previously, Viewty is JAVA compatible and so Opera Mini will work. Again as I also said, ensure you have a flat-fee Internet Package with your NSP.
7) No. As the viewty OS is in FAT format, it supports a max of 2GB. Only phones formatted in FAT32 such as the P1 can support 4GB and beyond. 16GB Memory Sticks (M2) for the P1 are available, and theoretically 32GB M2s are too.

I always found the Viewty to have a touch screen which isnt as responsive as the P1. Also, its lack of Wi-Fi and Memory Abilitiy is also something I'd stay clear of. Its lack of an actually input keyboard other than the answer/hang up keys and camera buttons put me off too. Overall, the Viewty is an old generation phone now.
If you do want to consider other newer phones similar to the viewty, the Samsung Omina or LG Renoir may be of interest.
Hope this helps,
Matt

Do you think he didn't get a new phone after 7 months, while he sais he doesn't want to wait four months for X1?
Pretty pointless to bump an 7 month old topic for this, IMO.

google mail can't be set up on the email client on the phone because the viewty has no SSL support.

Actually, i think you will find that many people use 4GB cards and more without a problem on the viewty. I'm getting one soon too.

Lol, thanks for your answers, maybe i will be useful to someone else
For the story I bought a HTC diamond after my P1i, and it was a great experience in the windows mobile world, I had a lot of fun with tweaking & customizing the phone.
But in the end it bored me and even with all the functions I never "loved" the phone like my old k800 or P1i
So I decided to jump in the apple train and I just bought a white 16Go Iphone with contract last week. And it's really another world, everything works, no hours of tweaking/flashing, and despite its lacks (screen resolution and 2Mp photo) it's such a different experience, it reminds me when I swiched from xp to linux years ago (appstore/cydia are so greaaat

)
