Why has video calling failed to capture the hearts and minds of the many 3G-enabled countries that have deployed the service? At Nokia's S60 Summit in Barcelona last week, it seems that the company's VP of Category Management (whatever the heck that means) for the Nseries line took a rather blunt approach to the question, claiming that it's because the angle at which the front-facing cams are held gives callers a view of your face that "isn't very flattering." He mentioned that most webcams are typically placed just above the user's line of sight, which gives a more pleasing view of the face; obviously, that's not something you can practically do with your phone most of the time.

i think its crap... it takes time to make change ppls mind and use it. its still expensive and for "live" calls there are free solutions on the internet.

I have used Video calling twice though not met anyone who has been willing to use it yet. Though i think its true cos of the placement of the video call camera your eyes end up looking slightly upwards and not straight at the screen so it makes you look a little ugly and dopey i think. Your never looking directly forward and never actually looking at the other callers face. Video calling also is more expensive too.

Hi all,

I think there are two reasons it has never taken off the first it the cost the second is it really isn't very practical. Who wants to try and walk whilst holding there phone in front of their face also it's pretty useless if your driving.

The only people who would use it are parents away from their small children and possibly people in love.

But although video calling was seen as the big push for bandwidth available from 3G we should be thankful as this is what has enabled the Networks to give us fixed price data plans at last to use the bandwidth they had doing very little.

Well I'd love to use video calling all the time (well, not quite ) but it's a tad expensive and I'm one of the few people I know whose phones support this feature.

to be honest, i am lucky, have 600 free mins on 3 ( vid and normal calls ) / month. and i have prepaid card
