> K850i GPRS

OK have two K850i's one is orange locked the other one I got the other day on a vode contract. Now the voda one has the new software on it and I seem to have GPRS always on. How can I stop this, I can not find an option to switch it off, can not find an option in the orange one either, I have the little G symbol above the signal meter all the time.

your tariff, it does eat some battery but that's it. I've just left mine on,
not that you can tell with the "generic" firmware as the icons aren't displayed !

It is a different symbol to look at to the one on my orange branded one, but in the same place, my orange one just shows it when you connect to wap, but the voda one shows it all the time. it is not the 3G symbol that comes up next to the signal meter when I have it switched on, this is the symbol for GPRS. There is no menu feature to switch it off that I can find.

I don't remember ever being able to turn off gprs on any of my unbranded s.e phones. If you want to make sure your not using any data, just rename the access point to something invalid. (add a letter to it). Then it will refuse the data connection. But, your still doing to have the G or E next to the signal. That's not going anywhere.

It doens't mean that you're online.
When you're in a region with low networkcoverage it will disappear.
This is just a feature for the signalmeter about the strength of the network and the available data-options.
With generic firmware and some branded ones, you don't have the G as GPRS-signal. There is the GPRS signalstrength shown by the upper triangle above the radiostrength triangle:

Just recognized, that the new SEs also have a G for GPRS coverage in the generic firmware:
But it's still the same:
above the signalstrength:
The G shows that the network has GPRS signal.
As a seperated symbol:
The H shows that the network has HSDPA signal.
The E shows that the network has EDGE signal.
The 3G shows that the network has 3G UMTS signal.
You're NOT online as long as you haven't the little flashing earth-signal.
With some phones you can switch off the G-signal by selecting 'only GSM' instead of 'GSM and GPRS' in the preferred dataconnection settings.
But not every SE has the option and also some branded ones haven't it.
