Sorry for this but I am one of those people who like the idea of customizing my Sony Ericsson K800i if I had any idea what all the jargon was I might give it a go. But all of the info I have read so far it seems you need to have been modifying for the past 10000 years to be all up to speed with tech terms know how to hack file just by looking at your mobile and be a pc and mobile tech freak. {I will say now though that I admire and envy those who can do what I can't and I take my hat off to you!!}
But as I have now spent the better part of two months looking here and all over the net to find out if a dummy like me can mod my only and for me very expensive! K800i [which except for a few things I like]
WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE
1.. MENU ICONS if that's all I can do then I'd be happy.
2.. DELETE THE PREINSTALLED CONTENT I DON'T WANT themes,music, videos, ringtones, games {are SE and Optus Australia afraid that I might not know who made my mobile or what operator I am on??? they need to get a grip and realise WE CAN GET OUR OWN SHIT TO FILL OUR FONES WITH COS THEIR SHIT SUCKS!!!!!!!}
3..CHANGE THE PLAY NOW ICON AND FILE SO I CAN USE THE SPOT FOR AN APPLICATION OR SOMETHING I ACTUALLY USE
I've tried xs++ but can never seem to find the exact info or download the right files I want or need as I said I'm a dummy and I have never done this before at all!
and its the same with far manager!!
I mean how do I tell if I have the right version, cid, main,fs,etc....
what has my phone already got.. what are the chances flashing is going to make my fone die...
all the posts I have come across so far have been very general and in terms I don't fully understand? {I'm not saying anything bad about the tutorials and the people who do a grand and what must be very trying job! again I say it I do admire and envy the people who do this job for all our benefits} but there seems to be a lot of people out there asking the same if not similar questions to me and I have read that some give it all up and don't bother as it all seems to hard and in some forums it can take months for someone to answer your posts if you're not best mates and been a member since Moses played fullback for Queensland!
one day I will crack it and workout how to get done all those points above until then I shall just read and look on in awe at those who can work it out PLEASE DO NOT GET UPSET AT MY POST AS I AM JUST HAVING A RANT AND IT IS NOT AIMED AT ANYONE..... THANK YOU TO ALL WHO DO READ THIS AND PLEASE ALWAYS REMEMBER TO THANK THE PEOPLE WHO TRY THEIR VERY BEST TO HELP YOU AND GIVE THEIR ADVICE IN THE FORUMS MOST OFTEN THAN NOT I SEE NO THANKS FOR THE ONES JUST LENDING A HAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha, I applaud your rant mate. I am sort of like you, but I just don't bother with it because I'd rather not risk screwing things up.
However, deleting the pre-installed crap is one of the easiest things to do. I have at least done that and I'm someone can lead you to some very easy instructions to do so (it was a while ago that I did it). Good luck!

Not a problem. I can try to help you.
Here is a link to one of my posts when I was working it out:
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=163848#post2241493
You need XS++ to do it, and presumably you know how to connect your phone to your computer with XS++ (pressing the C button, etc). Then you go to the option labeled 'FS' which allows you to go through the system files of your phone.
Finding the pictures and music you want to delete should be easy. Its under what you'd expect them to be under, and the filenames should give them away. I can't remember, but working out how to delete shouldn't be too hard. There's probably even a delete button lol.
To delete games, do as I said in the link I just gave you - go to tpa/preset/system/ams, then find the games you want gone. That is, click tpa, then find the folder named preset which is inside the tpa folder, then system, then ams. This is the location of the games.
Like I said I did this a while ago, and my memory ain't too flash, but I do remember it was easy. Let us know how you get on or if you need more help.

Thats fine.

Now its late in New Zealand, so I'm off. But if you need help, I'm sure someone will be glad to help you out, but if they don't, I can help tomorrow evening.

I think you should go for it

Really, I've bricked my phone for dozens of times (usually it was my fault) and I've always brought it to life in a matter of minutes by reflashing a clean firmware. It's all really easy once you have all the files you need and a little courage.

Firstly, you say it's hard to find the required files; almost any file you could require will be available on
http://www.iprotebe.cz
The latest release version of xs++ is 3.1 - available at
http://www.se-nse.net/gbrooks3/XS++/download.php
Once connected there is the option to do a gdfs backup in the xs++ application. Also after connecting your phone the cid version along with software versions ect are shown in the status window on the left hand side.
Hope this helps
Edit - The link to xs++ isn't working as esato seems to replace the '+' characters with a space so just copy and paste the url into your address bar instead
