canon all the way . Even if you go for a slightly older one like the 350d. They are awesome. I used to use a 350d and now i've got a 40d cant praise them enough

I use an EOS650. I bought it for £27 so you'll have a fair bit of change from your £250
Well I've got a TZ3 as a point an shoot too but I love my 650. It's older than me and the photos that I can take with it look stunning.
Oh and +£33 for a lens, £11 battery, £5 film and that's it. You've got a basic setup to learn with.
It's working out fantastically for me, all for under a hundred quid.

I've used Canon from the 250D to the 350D that I dropped early this year and I can say Canon is good and you won't regret it. Almost bought the 400D until I held and tested the Nikon D200. The D200 made me fall in love with Nikon and am really enjoying taking pics with my D200, I don't think I'll move back to Canon again after owning this baby.

Ive had the 400D for a couple of months now (my first DSLR), love the camera take it to pretty much every event i go to, produces beatiful pics
If you get it with the Kit lens (18-55mm) dont make the mistake of buying a bigger telephoto lens u will quickly find that there are much better "general purpose" lenses out there than the kit lens i.e. Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Zoom Lens and the Canon EF 28-135 mm - f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
