Personal number plates seem very restrictive in UK!
In Melbourne I had a mark1 MR2 which I put "MR TWO" on as little cost.
In Sydney I first had "REB00T" (being an IT guy!), thats R-E-B-zero-zero-T, which fitted the standard number scheme and so cost nothing extra and then I got a Saab cabrio and put "AVIATR" on it, again not too expensive
Queensland has even more possibilities as does many US states.
now I'm here and the kids have grown up I've decided to get a perfect condition mark1 MR2 again but as its G reg (1990) DVLA say I can put a personal plate on it but it has to be a plate that doesn't make the car seem newer, i.e. I can only use a prefix of A-G or pay exhorbitant amounts for an older style number plate
why are they so restrictive?
what personal plates do you guys have and are there any tricks to getting something decent here in UK that I may have missed?

We can use any 7 letter words, barring swear words etc.
My plates was my previous nic on this forum.
Then my car was stolen, decided not go with personalized plates even though I still own the other one.

Personal plates haven't bothered me since I found out the same info from DVLA, a good decade ago now! Always wanted
F45TER myself, unfortunately, it was in use when I checked, and prob hasn't been transferred since(well, I wouldn't sell it if I had it)......
Unfortunately, no reg tricks from me(DVLA are just tight, end of story), but if you want the car to be better/faster/lighter/shinier, drop me a pm......

I've loved the mark1 since I first saw it and was lucky to get one of the first 10 in Australia. Had to sell it when the kids came.
Hated the mark2 but quite like the roadster
I'll be joining the MR2 car club but its nice to know someone here who knows stuff because I'm just not mechanically minded

Woah!! Thats expensive, guess we lucky personalised plates cost 200 Pounds for 7 letters, 70 Pounds for 3 letters and 3 numbers and 30 Pounds for normal plates.

Got M4AX B for me
they are quite restrictive, but its good, means when you have a good one you stand out. Plus means cant make cars look newer than they are which I agree with

MAR 71N, but in those days you were unable to buy plates like you are now. From what I can remember if you could find a good plate is cost about a tenner to assign to your car.
How things have changed over the years.
The DVLA hold auctions where you can buy plates, they work out a better price than from the dealers. Take a look on the DVLA site they have the latest auction details there.
The other thing to remember with the UK number plate system, the plate is NEVER yours it always belongs to the DVLA!
You say about prices, I can remember some time ago in the early 80's,
MUS 1C selling for £120,000! That was a lot for a number plate in those days. The most obvious one known by everyone is
COM 1C on Jimmy Tarbucks car.
