When you want the phone to work worlwide, tri-band isn't enough, you'll need at least a quad-band phone and even then it won't work really everywhere as in some countries (like Japan), GSM isn't used.
But the newest 3G phones seem to work in Japan, so the phone will need to have 3G then also.

i should have been more specific

usa, europe ,and middle east

those regions should be enough for tri band

and 3g is fine. because he wants a new hip phone and 3g means will be a large screen

Can't get much hipper. I haven't checked but will assume Remi will work anywhere on the planet?

Yes, for Europe, USA and Middle East tri-band is sufficient.
You're right, due to camera and internet, the newest phones usually have the largest screens, even if this means he'll have a lot of functions he'll never use , many people have high-specced phones, which they only use for calls and texts.
The keys could be more problematic though, modern phones don't always have the best keypads.
Maybe you could accompany him to a shop to try out the keys of some phones he likes ? Preferably not dummies, they sometimes have horrible keypads.

USA also has 850mhz. so if you want a phone that works in US of A you will need a quadband phone. some phones, the "a" ones have 850.

what phone? the Z750, but not in pink
