Russian officials are putting the blame for a sudden surge in deaths from lightning strikes at increased mobile phone ownership. The most notable case was Marina Sadykova who was talking on a mobile phone when struck by lightning. When her body was recovered, the mobile phone was found melted to her hand.

Various Russian newspapers have also cited several instances in the past couple of weeks where the victims were using mobile phones when hit by a lightning strike.

Yeah... don't know if it is an urban myth, but lightning strikes are associated to cellphone usage.

I blame their tesla coils. I seen them beat the allieds in command and conquer. They all fried without mobile phones.

Its scarry but very true. Lightning aint no joke. However my mind doesnt want to open up as to how can a cell attract lightning

Makes sense mobiles use electro magnetic radio waves. Lightning could strike cos the phone is sending out signals and it could react to that. Thats my theory.

Depending where she was, with her hand raised to the ear and the factor of metals in the phone its quite possible.

I will never forget the day my brother was struck with lightning. Heavy storm and my mum told him to get off the house phone, he refused and carried on talking, next thing all we saw was this BLUE ball, in the house and a deafening sound of thunder after.

Next thing we just hear a faint cry coming from the lounge, my brother is stood there with the phone stuck to his ear and hands, and his clothes torn as if someone had ripped them. Scary sight.

And with the phone lines all dead, (pre-mobile phone era) there was no way to call for an ambulance and they sure as hell were not going to get through in that storm.

It was so powerfull it dropped power lines the works. Never forget that day,thankfully he survived but lightning is no joke.
