On my N71 the GPRS could remain connected for up to 3-4 hours if there was something running in the background that uses GPRS, like browser. But on W950 it disconnects after 3-4 minutes of inactivity even if i am using the web browser. I have the dial up time out to 'never' but it doesnt helps. Only rarely it happens that GPRS remains connected.
Why is that?

You could try setting your connection to Circuit switched (CS) rather than automatic: Control panel - connections - internet accounts - more - options - prefered mode.

I believe it defaults to PS (packet switched), and it sounds to me like your provider may have a policy of terminating connection quickly, possibly to save bandwidth.

Yes,that's exactly the point with GPRS.It shows a dim globe after a few minutes and it will enter some kind of sleep mode but it's always-on.That's the concept:you are always on and get charged only for the data you require. So, i think it's just a difference from a graphic point of view between SE and Nokia.

no it doesnt go into 'dim mode'. it simply disconnects. and if it keeps on disconnecting after 5 minutes, it will cost me more than if it were just connected.

As I said,the cost is the same.It will charge only what you consume.I think it's a non-issue,really.

like i said, the cost is not the same. its cheaper for me if its connected and not in use, rather than disconnecting intermittently

Just curious, how can it be more expensive if it "disconnects"?

It doesn't really matter regarding the cost if it's connected or not when you only pay for what you consume, at least that's what i think.

here's how it works.

it immediately takes Rs 1.3 when GPRS connects, and then another 1.33 after every 64kb consumed. so if i keep connecting and only using 5-6kb each time i'll end up spending more than Rs 20 and consuming only about 40kb

Well, I see what you mean:your operator charges a flat rate when you "connect". Maybe other costs, too, but this is your main concern.Do you have a detailed bill to be sure it's like this?
Because from what I know "connecting" to network doesn't exactly mean consumption. That's why I said: get a detailed monthly bill to be sure what you say it's true.

I've never heard of such a connection charge and it doesn't make any sense, as occupying gprs slots shouldn't cost anything as long as you don't use them.

Anyway, even if it should exist, I believe that it would be charged only once per day.
