Just an idea.

Esato sets up a fund which any members can donate a small amount to, say £1

100 members gives £100.

Then when someone gets scammed, they can apply to get a refund from the fraud fund temporarily until they sort out a refund with the scammer.

This would have to be anonymous so the scammer does not get to know if the person they scam has claimed money or not.

Then when (or IF) the scammed person gets a real refund, they send money back to Fraud Fund, If they do not receive refund from scammer then I assume then they get the police involved.

No idea what we do if someone scams the Fraud Fund, protection must be used in order to protect this from happening.

The incentive of members donating would be to have one last line of protection if they did happen to be scammed. Obviously if too many scams take place the fund will run dry...

I would be happy to donate a couple of quid.

What are your thoughts on this?

It's a nice idea, but I really don't see it happening. There would probably a lot of security concerns,

@Gregface

I think this should work more like the Insurance companies do for the uninsured drivers fund. In that case a % of each Policy sold makes a contribution. So here where there are no seller fees each phone sold contributes a small amount to the fund. That way buyers and sellers would be funding it as i really don't see why anyone else would want to or should contribute to it.

I also think the biggest problem will be who holds the funds and also who is going to want to administrate it but in theory it does sound good.

Sounds a bit much like dealing with the symptoms and not the cause but if it works then I don't see any reason not to.

unworkable...scammers will defraud the fund and get even richer.

This fund would increase the instances of fraud because scammers would think that the fund will make it all better for the victim and the scammers conscience would be satisfied. Why should a fun be setup to indirectly benefit scammers? It's a naive suggestion really and is not feasible.
