Hi Guys,
I was wondering if there is any difference between the two formats based on quality and which one do you use yourself. Any thoughts.
Which format should I choose for putting my record collection on to my W980?

AAC is the more 'efficient' codec of the two.
Ripping at the same kbps rate with either should produce the same file size (output). Despite this, you should have better audio quality with the AAC.
In simple terms, you can rip at a lower kbps bitrate than you would normally use, choose AAC as your audio codec and be happy with the quality. The trade off is between sound quality and file size (as normal)
For testing purposes, just rip the same track with different codecs/bitrates and see which ones you prefer.

I think another thing is that the playback quality depends on the player.
so if the player doesn't properly implement aac then it won't be as good as it is suppose to be.
and i think most player properly implement mp3 over aac.

I have downloaded dBpoweramp and converting just one MP3 song and the same song from a CD (for testing purpose) to AAC and would listen to both MP3 and AAC (with different bitrates), and would let you all know of any difference.
But I am sure W980 would be good for AAC as well becuase it is at its best for MP3s in current Walkman series.

If all your gadgets can play AAC files, then I think AAC will be the better choice.

I prefer mp3. Nowadays storage capacity isn't bad. So Normally i used 192kbps. In future, no matter any player i'll get, i'm sure atleast mp3 will support so i won't have to convert again. To me, mp3 sound quality is better then AAC.

I guess AAC is becoming a standard in parallel with MP3s because nowadays every newly developed Music player does support both the formats at the same time.
But I have tried it for a couple of hours and played the same MP3 track again and again in conjunction with AAC and as a result (on the basis of my judgement) AAC does sound relatively or rather I should say slightly good and deep on W980 but again if your ears are on sensitive side.

Well personally i find AAC to give much better results as does using a higher rate as the lower the rate the less information there is to decode. All of my Music is converted from CD's and @256kbps AAC as i find this really gives a full and rich sound as well as a full soundstage. Really using low bit rates whilst giving you more room really does compromise the quality of what you hear. Especially now even 8GB cards are relatively inexpensive it seems silly to compromise the sound for the sake of space IMO.
