On SE phones when the signals drop, the phone switches to emergency calls only mode and the signal bar shows full signals. What i want to know is where do those signals come from?

This happens when you switch to another network in absence of a signal from your provider. They will not allow any calls except emergency calls.. worldwide the number is 112 and maybe 911 for the US. South asian countries afaik do not have such a standard emergency number.. i might be wrong! but the number usually is 112 here too. So, basically its useless here.

in the uk there is an agreement between all the networks that in case of emergency u can use any of the four networks to make 999 calls.... this is a requirement from the government.

You'd hope that the networks would make this agreement without the goverment requiring it. It just seems like common sense to allow emerg. calls no matter where you are!

Yes.. correct.. so do all the phones in the UK have the emergency number set to 999?

Last time I checked, the number could not be changed.. so we in India are stuck with 112.. which practically serves no purpose.

Sony Ericsson Phones generly have 3 numbers present in the emergency menu
112
999
911.

If in the uk and most of europe, you can dial 999 or 112 and get through to the emergency services using the phones

Im not sure on the 911 being dialed in the uk as this is a prefix for USA, Canada etc.

112 does not work here.. (and last time i checked , India was a part of the world )100, 101 does. But no phones have those stored.. and you cannot change the emergency number.

Yes.. i did check that.. Quote from Wikipedia:

GSM telephone users who make calls to 112 generally have their calls redirected to the local emergency telephone number, if it exists. This is valuable for foreign travelers, who may not know the local emergency number. Most GSM mobile phones can dial 112 calls even when the phone keyboard is locked, the phone is without a SIM card, or instead of the PIN.

I certainly know that dialling 112 in India will not get you anywhere.. it wont be redirected.. tried it just now on my N73 and it did sat "attempting emergency call and disconnected. Try 100 or 101 when in India.. that too in cities.
